Since its creation, NCW organized awareness raising sessions on various important issues pertaining to women. These were in the forms of symposia, roundtables, workshops. The most important are cited hereunder:
A workshop on Gender Mainstreaming Indicators in the Education Sector from was held 22 to 24 November 2000, with the purpose of narrowing the gender gap in secondary education for girls.
A workshop entitled Women and Media was organized on 25 January 2001, during which an important recommendation was made to hold a series of meetings with media workers on a regular basis to improve women's image in the media
A seminar was organized under the title " Empowerment of Women in the Government Sector - A framework for an Administrative Improvement Programme - on 4 February 2001. The following recommendations were made:
Creation of a mechanism to deal with women's problems in the labour market.
The inclusion of a component for awareness raising of the role of women in the administrative training programmes.
A symposium was organized on 12 February 2001 on the "Eradication of Illiteracy over the next Five Years".
A series of workshops were held with newspapers columnists and drama authors throughout 2001.
NCW Standing Committees organized parallel public meetings during NCW's second National Conference on Gender Mainstreaming into the National Development Plan of the Country 2002 - 2007. The Conference was chaired by Mrs. Mubarak.
A meeting was convened with the Women's Secretariats of the Parties on 24 February 2001 to lay down a strategy of cooperation with NCW.
A meeting took place on 14 May 2001 on Gender Indicators to shed light on gender disparities in the labour market and on the status of men and women at the national and local levels.
On 20 May 2001, a seminar on Women and Globalization was organized to describe the impact of globalization on the Egyptian women.
A workshop was organized, from 2 - 3 July 2001, in collaboration with the Planning and Gender Policies Unit of the Institute of National Planning, in preparation for mainstreaming gender into the plans of the Ministries of Health and Population and Environment
NCW participated in the summer camps organized by the Ministries of Youth and Higher Education , during which youth of both sexes interacted with NCW members, who listened to their concerns, explained the purpose of the creation of the Council and emphasized the importance of the role of women in the development of society. These field visits were made to Port Said, Abu Kir, Rosetta, Romman, Suez, El Tur, Gamasah, El Arish, 6th October and Safaga, over the period 11 July to 29 August 2001
In its outreach activities , NCW organized a seminar on Women and Media in Aswan on 25 July 2002, and a workshop (2-3 November 2001) for the media workers of the 5 regions that have television channels.
At the international level, a workshop was conducted on Women and the Challenges of a Fast Changing World, as a parallel activity of the Special Arab Women Summit on 12 November 2001, with participants from the countries of the Arab Region.
On 30 December 2001, NCW convened a meeting with the Women's Secretariats of the Parties and the Standing Committee for Political Participation. The following issues were discussed:
The proportion of women in the electoral lists
The plans of the parties to support the candidatures of women in the forthcoming local elections.
Also on 30 December 2001, the Council organized a workshop for the Development of El Galaa Teaching Hospital and how to supply the hospital with modern equipment and services . |
With the Media:
In its ongoing collaboration with the media , NCW conducted and participated in the following activities:
On 2 January, NCW convened a seminar on " the Image of the Egyptian Family in television drama", because of the influence of the media in shaping public opinion, either positively or negatively. NCW Secretary-General recommended convening meetings on a regular basis to exchange and share views with media experts on social issues pertaining to the Egyptian family and women, in particular.

A roundtable with El Ahram newspapers columnists on Egyptian Media and Women on 26 June 2002 aiming at consolidating relationships with media workers at their workplace to inform them of the efforts that have been undertaken in mainstreaming gender in to the National Development Plan 2002-2007.

Rights and Duties of Women/Development:
NCW has participated in the following:
A series of meetings within the framework of "The Rights and Duties of Women. " The first of these meetings took place on 8 January 2002 was under the title "Women and Environment", which discussed what the Government has provided to the Egyptian women in this area and what is expected of them. The meeting also discussed success stories.
A Seminar on the "Framework for the Human Development Report 2002", organized by the Ministry of Planning (30 January).
A workshop organized by The Women and Society NGO on 13 March to follow up on the international conferences and conventions.
A symposium on the Role of Women in the Development of Society, organized by the Faculty of Arts, Sciences and Education for Girls, Ain Shams University (10 April).
A Conference on the Role of Women in the Development of Society, organized by the Faculty of Science, Tanta University (14 April). NCW delivered a lecture.
A Meeting organized by the United Nations Development Programme on the Millennium Development Goals (11 June) to discuss the report prepared for this purpose and the role of NCW in promoting gender equity in the National Development Plan 2002-2007.
The Regional Information Workshop organized by the Arab Media Forum, in collaboration with UN Habitat and The Development and Environment Writers Association in preparation for the Sustainable Human Development (SHD) Summit (30 June). Issues discussed were SHD Past, Present and Future, SHD in Arab Countries, the Road to Johannesburg, the role of the information networks: international, regional and local and media in Johannesburg.
A seminar organized by the Greater Cairo Library and the Arab Alliance for Women, in collaboration with UNDP and Konrad Adenauer to discuss the Arab Human Development Report: Political and Civic Freedoms (30 September)

In its outreach activities, NCW organized a series of workshops on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women in Fayoum, Qena, Qalyubia, North and South Sinai, Assiut, Sharkeya,Giza, Cairo, Minia, Menufia, the Red Sea, Sohag, Suez, Beni Suef, Dakahlia, Aswan, Beheira, Kafr El Sheikh, Port Said, Ismailia , Matruh, Alexandria, Damietta and the New Valley, over the period January -February 2002.

A series of public conferences with the local councils in most of the governorates: Sohag, North Sinai, Giza, Damietta and Sharkeya, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Dakahleya, Assiut, Gharbia, the New Valley, Ismailia, Qalyubia, Port Said, Menufia, Fayoum, during January-February 2002.
An awareness raising seminar at Cairo University on 12 February to support women participation in the forthcoming local elections.
A meeting organized by the "Tagamoo "party in Alexandria on 19 March on the occasion of the International Women Day.
A workshop organized by the Arab Alliance for Women in Qalyubia " The Role of Women in Public, Political and Social Work" (26-27 May). The following recommendations were made: Working at increasing the representation of women in local councils and the necessity of building the capacity of women through training sessions, seminars, etc. to promote their effective participation in public, social and political life.
A meeting in July 2002 entitled Women and the Local Elections of 2002, with representatives of the parties to review the performance of women in these elections. A study was produced on this issue.

To activate its partnership with NGOs, NCW participated in the following:
The celebration of the International Women Day with the General Federation of NGOs (23 March).
Workshops entitled "Working with Partners" , in Cairo, Alexandria, the Red Sea Governorates, Qena and Luxor during which proposals for working mechanisms and processes, as well as the constraints, between NCW and NGOs were reviewed (April-June 2002).
Education, Research, Information and Technology:

In collaboration with GALEA, the General Agency for Literacy and Education of the Adults, NCW organized a seminar to discuss its vision for female adult illiteracy eradication over five years in January 2002. The major recommendations that emerged were to intensify government and non-governmental efforts within a national campaign to eradicate female illiteracy, to link literacy programmes to vocational skills training and to employment opportunities, as well as to continuously monitor and evaluate the efforts undertaken.
NCW organized a seminar on Scientific Research and Technology for Development - The Role of Women - to demonstrate the importance of the role of women in scientific research policies, priorities, and sustainable development (27 February)
The celebration of Cairo University Alumni entitled "Women Day at the local, regional and international levels (12 March)
A workshop organized by the Ministry of Education on Illiteracy and Adult Education (25 June).
The 3rd Preparatory Meeting for the International Summit of the Information Society, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Telecommunications, with the aim of envisioning the role of NCW in preparation for this meeting (11 September).

NCW convened a Seminar on Women in the Private Sector, during which important issues were discussed. Among these were the new labour law and its effect on women in the private sector, the reasons that prevent their access to work in the private sector, the problems that women encounter in the private sector, etc. (10 February).
NCW organized an awareness raising session on gender-sensitive budgeting and auditing (11-13 February) with participation from the officials concerned with budgeting and auditing in the various ministries

A seminar on Women and the Population Problem was held on 13 February 2002. The main topic was the role of women in addressing the issue of population increase and development, with the support of NGOs and the civil society and exploring new approaches.
