The Training Centre

Introduction

Article 9 of the Presidential Decree establishing the National Council for Women stipulates that the Council shall “…organize training and awareness raising sessions on the role of women in society, her rights and her duties..”

The Women Business Development Centre (WBDC) is considered an illustration of this article, as it aims at empowering women to fulfill their economic and social role and to integrate their efforts into the overall development plan. The Centre offers a variety of programmes and services to help women undertake small projects and assist young women entrepreneurs. Training on project management and counseling on the requirements and procedures of the lending and credit organizations, bookkeeping, etc. are offered. Reputable service providers, state of the art training tools and technologies are available to the Egyptian women so that they can acquire the skills in demand by the market. WBDC will also mount a database and documentation on the various statistics, services, facilities and training available.

2001

Training was conducted for NGOs on the Small Grants Programme – February 2001.

A training to raise the awareness of female doctors on their role within the Comprehensive Development Plan took place on 15 February 2001- It covered aspects such as reproductive health, the social doctor, harmful practices, etc.

Several training sessions were conducted in various governorates on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (Alexandria, Cairo, Giza, Qaliyubia, Aswan, Minia, Fayoum, Matruh) during the period January – June 2001, and in NCW in September 2001.

Capacity Building of NGOs in the governorates was organized from 19 to 22 August 2001.

Sensitization of Media Workers on issues such as Gender mainstreaming and stereotyping of women in the media was in the form of workshops from 10-12 September 2001.

Training sessions on strategic planning with officials concerned with planning in the various line ministries were held from 1 to 3 October 2001.

NCW participated in the ILO/Turin Centre workshop on Promoting the rights of Working Women.

2002

NGOs in the governorates received training on administrative skills, and capacity building in Creative Thinking, Advocacy, and Coalition Building.

Training was organized in NCW for the Equal Opportunities Units in the various ministries during 15-16 April 2002 on modern and scientific analytical methods of data and statistics, particularly those relating to gender and development and on establishing work processes between NCW and the ministries.

Between 21 July and 24 September 2002, capacity building of the local NCW branches in the governorates took place to give them the skills needed and to empower them to undertake the functions assigned to them (Cairo, Giza, North and South Sinai, Port Said, Fayoum, Beni Suef, Sharkiah , Assiut, Minia, Menufia, the New Valley, Sohag, Gharbeya, Alexandria, Qena, Luxor, Matruh, Ismailia, Kafr El Sheikh, Suez, Damietta and Dakahleya. The training also included monitoring and evaluation, and collaboration with the NCW Headquarters, etc.

In August 2002, NCW Branch in Alexandria, in collaboration with the Social Fund for Development , the Egyptian Association for Small Business Incubators and the Ministry of Manpower and Labour organized a 33-day training for women entrepreneurs, which included accounting, marketing, feasibility studies, etc. Success stories were highlighted.

In collaboration with CEDPA and the Population Research and Training Institute of Alexandria, NCW embarked on an experimental training project for NCW members in the local branches on data collection and definition of women issues. It started in the governorates of Minia, Beheira, Fayum and Qaliyubia and will be followed by the other governorates. The aim is to create a common vision for all NCW members on the understanding of women’s issues, to build their ability to enter into an effective social dialogue with policy and decision makers and to forge strategic alliances and coalitions. It also aims at using scientific planning methods, data gathering tools and results-based workplans.

NCW participated in the training session organized by the Young Arab Lawyers’ Union on “Documenting the Israeli War crimes” in October 2002.

NCW branch in el Arish organized a training session to develop the political skills of women, which targeted those directly involved in political work, such as representatives of the two houses of parliament and the Women Secretariats of the Parties.
