Launch of "Gender Mainstreaming in Development" project


On Sunday December 7, 2003, the National Council for Women, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) celebrated


the launch of project "Gender Mainstreaming in Development" at the dinner event held at the Marriott Hotel.

Dr. Farkhonda Hassan, Secretary General of the Council, lead the speeches, highlighting the importance of incorporating gender in planning and the necessity for participatory planning. Dr. Farkhonda elaborated the gender needs assessment survey, which will be carried out during the project, stating that without the support of the Governors, this would not have been possible. She was followed by Dr. Hoda Sobhy, Project Coordinator, who gave a brief presentation on the project components and expected outcomes. Dr. Faysal Abdel-Gadir, UNFPA representative, spoke next, voicing his pleasure at the strong partnership between the Council and the UNFPA. Minister of Planning, Dr. Osman M. Osman followed, stating the importance of continued support from all ministries in developing the next Five Year National Plan. General Mustafa Abdel Kader, Minister of Local Development, gave the final speech indicating his support for the assessment survey and the value of having local development plans.

The Governor of Kalubiya, Mr. Adly Hussein, a guest at the event, then spoke at length of the importance of gender development and the need for continued support for decentralization in planning.

The speeches were proceeded by dinner.
