Under the chairmanship of H.E Ms. Suzannne Mubarak , the National Council for Women holds it's 4th National Conference from 13 to 16 March 2004 in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina to discuss the issue of women and the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs).

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, this prestigious centre of knowledge, will host during this period, eminent thinkers, and advocates dedicated to the cause of women empowerment and development who will discuss the role of women in achieving the millennium development Goals, which President Mubarak has signed during the UN conference of 2000. The Conference will hold 4 separate workshops that cover the 8 goals of the MDGs and the mechanisms needed to achieve them.

These goals are:

  • Eradication of extreme poverty and hunger
  • Ensuring basic education for all
  • Gender equality and empowerment of women
  • Reducing children mortality rate
  • Improving maternal health
  • Combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other major diseases
  • Ensuring environmental sustainability

  • It is hoped that the "Alexandria Declaration" during the plenary session of 16 March, which will be presided by H.E Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak will include recommendations for concrete, time-bound actions for the National Council for Women within the framework of the national endeavours.
