The National Council for Women (NCW)
has assumed the responsibility of assisting disadvantaged women who do not
possess identity cards to obtain this important document. It is an
unfortunate fact that many Egyptian women still do not have an identity
card, the most important official document that links them to and helps
their integration into society.
For this reason, NCW in cooperation with all competent government
authorities has helped in the issuance of birth certificates for woman who
are not on the official registers, as a pre-requisite to helping her obtain
an identity card that will enable her to benefit from the social services
available and from which she was hitherto deprived, due to the absence of an
ID.
Furthermore, the NCW branch offices in the governorates have been active in
launching an awareness-raising campaign to motivate women to obtain this
important document. At the same time, NCW approached the competent
authorities to facilitate the procedures required for women to obtain
identity cards. In many instances, the fees for obtaining the card were
borne by NCW and its partners to ensure that poor women obtain this
important document.
The partners which included governors, officials of the Ministries of
Interior, health, Social Solidarity and NGOs all cooperated with NCW branch
offices to facilitate this process, through which some 1.888.724 women were
able to obtain identity cards up to April 30, 2007.
